INFORMATION, TRIBUTES
AND ARTICLES ABOUT BRUCE
This is the correct version of the liner notes Bruce wrote for the Symposium CD reissue of these operas (Symposium 1267). Symposium altered Bruce's text without his permission and introduced several errors as a result. http://www.concentric.net/~Oakapple/gasdisc/pin1907r-intro.htm http://www.concentric.net/~oakapple/gasdisc/mik1917-usa.htm or http://www.cris.com/~oakapple/gasdisc/mik1917-usa.htm Bruce's opinion: "I would not recommend seeking this out except for the unintentional hilarity it will give to connoisseurs." http://www.cris.com/~oakapple/gasdisc/pingood.htm http://www.cris.com/~oakapple/gasdisc/mikcivic.htm Bruce's opinion: "The Pirates set begins with one of the worst professional performances (perhaps the worst) of Samuel's first solo on records." http://www.cris.com/~oakapple/gasdisc/pircivic.htm Bruce contributed significant information about the issue history, based on his experience as a Victor collector http://www.cris.com/~oakapple/gasdisc/mik1926.htm Bruce presents some of his Holy Cross colleague Bob Principe's comments on this jazz version of Mikado. Bruce's summing-up: "the most creative and interesting thing about the record is the liner notes." http://www.cris.com/~oakapple/gasdisc/mikcoolest.htm http://www.cris.com/~oakapple/gasdisc/mik1966v-promo.htm http://www.cris.com/~Oakapple/gasdisc/mc-verity.htm or http://www.concentric.net/~oakapple/gasdisc/mc-verity.htm http://www7.concentric.net/~Oakapple/gasdisc/miscover-fiedler.htm

Bruce realised some time
in the
late 1990s that he possessed the only surviving copy of the soundtrack
to this trailer on a Vitaphone disc, which he had obtained together
with
other discs in a lot at an auction in 1989. He read something about the
trailer having turned up minus the sound, and contacted the relevant
experts.
Bruce's disc was restored in Long Island by Seth Winner on behalf of
UCLA.
When I first visited Bruce in November 1998 he was very excited about
this
project. The restored trailer was shown on Saturday 5 August 2000 at
the
UCLA Film and Television Archive 10th Festival of Preservation (http://www.cinema.ucla.edu/festival/fp10/2000Fest2.html).
Bruce and his brother Tom attended the screening.
